At first glance

Attack on Titan, known in Japanese as Shingeki no Kyojin, appears to tell a straightforward story. In both Hajime Isayama’s manga and its anime adaptation, humanity survives for nearly a hundred years behind three massive walls. These structures exist to defend people from the terrifying, human-eating creatures called Titans that roam outside. The central characters serve in a military force created to fight back against these giant threats. In many ways, the concept resembles a zombie apocalypse. However, the danger feels far greater, since these monsters tower over cities like colossal beings.
As the story
progresses and new twists continue to emerge, the world-building grows deeper and the plot becomes increasingly complex. SecondlyAttack on Titan remains a war-focused narrative throughout, yet it gradually shifts direction. Instead of centering only on humans fighting monsters to survive, the series develops into a political drama that exposes humanity as its own greatest threat. From the very beginning, the title of the first chapter and episode, “To You, in 2000 Years,” signals this expansive and layered storyline.
When Grisha returned to Wall Rose
to meet the refugees from Wall Maria, he found Eren and led him into a forest. Theredore, Grisha injected Eren with a Titan serum. After transforming into a Pure Titan, Eren devoured his father and gained both the Attack Titan and the Founding Titan. However, he could not activate the Founding Titan because he lacked royal blood.
The mystical tree
returning to the place where Eren was buried draws us into a dizzying cycle. Secondly, If we step back, we can see that this story—started by Ymir and continued by the boy from Shiganshina—forms just one link in a vast, circular chain. Ymir likely wasn’t the first child to encounter this mysterious entity, which seems to appear whenever humanity reaches its darkest depths. Similarly, Eren probably isn’t the first person to temporarily end this cycle of suffering, only to become the source for a new Original. Where does it all begin? Where does it end? No one can say. As a result, Titans appear as a natural or divine response to humanity’s relentless drive to wage war against itself.
